THE FRIENDS OF HOPI FOUNDATION
December 2007 News letter |
As you may be aware, the service program that had been sponsored by Elderhostel was discontinued in 2006. We received inquiries from the schools and past volunteers asking if The Friends of Hopi Foundation could sponsor the program. We thought, sure we can do that. Well, ask Bob Montgomery how easy that was. HOWEVER, WE DID IT!
The first week there were 10 volunteers working in Hotevilla Bacavi
Community School and Second Mesa Day School, and the second week we
had 20. It was interesting having volunteers who had been coming
over the years, back together—something like a High School reunion!
The Hopi Culture Center was also buzzing in the evening with
volunteers and their “Hopi families” having dinner together. It was
fun to be there on Halloween. Several of the volunteers dressed in
costume along with the teachers and students.
One evening the annual board meeting of Friends of Hopi Foundation
was held after dinner. During the week John & Bob Montgomery had a
very productive meeting with administrators and teachers from Second
Mesa Day School to answer questions and ask for their direction in
continuing the service program. Mrs. Alma Sinquah, Principal of
HBCS, met with the group on Friday evening and expressed her
appreciation to the Foundation and volunteers for their service and
asked us to continue the program. The Second Mesa School Board has
met and voted to invite us back also.
Now, that we’ve done it once—we think we can do it again. A big Hopi thank you (Askwali) to those who made it happen and those who came to serve.

SECOND MESA AND HOTEVILLA TEACHER LIST
The
Foundation asked the teachers at these two schools to compile a list
of the items they wanted most for their schools. The idea was that
those interested could single out items they would like to donate
funds for and we would group them together in order to get the best
price breaks that quantities allow.
The lists below are combined and are in
priority order beginning with the most wanted.
Each item is followed by an approximate cost.
If you wish to provide funds for one or more of these items,
send your check to the Foundation designating what you want
purchased. Also, let us
know if you would like your name included with the item(s).
