Christmas Comes Early to Second Mesa Day School

                                                                 by Luanne Zacek

Christmas came early to 2nd Mesa Day School when the Friends of Hopi Foundation presented the school with instructional media. two listening centers with earphones will be housed in the library for teachers to check out. Each center will accommodate three listeners at one time to hear stories on tape or CD. Four maps were delivered to classrooms and will aid in Social Studies lessons. Math games with stopwatches will help with accuracy and estimation of time.
The science lab received a microscope for help with science experiments and discovery.  The items presented to 2nd Mesa School were on the wish list the school provided the foundation last year and funds were raised to provide the items. What I Did on My Summer Vacation

by Frankie Ramey

This past summer 17 of the 25 members of my family met at the Grand Canyon for a reunion. They came from six different states: New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, California, Washington and Texas. Our ages ranged from 1 1/2 years old to 76. After several days at the Grand Canyon, we caravanned to the Hopi Reservation in Arizona for a visit. We shopped, of course, and spent the night at the Hopi Cultural Center and enjoyed

their wonderful Fry Bread. The next day as we started home, we toured the beautiful, new Second Mesa Day School.
Through the years my children and grandchildren have all been very supportive of my volunteering at the Hopi Schools. They have also sent clothes and made donations to the Friends of Hopi Foundation in my name. They really enjoyed seeing place I’ve told them about since 2002.

Many Firsts During Fall 2008 Service Program

by Ginny Rundell

The second week of the service program had many firsts. The first snow of the year came on Sunday night, we had a new participant and Veteran’s Day was celebrated in a grand fashion.
The group was smaller the second week, but the addition of Artemis made the week special. Those of us who had participated the first week returned to our classrooms with a feeling of belonging and a renewed sense of dedication to the program. The highlight of the second week was the Veteran’s Day celebration. The morning was spent at the Veteran’s Memorial Center where two of our group, Shirley Thompson (WW2) and Bob Sampson (Korean War) were recognized along with the Hopi Veterans. In the afternoon we went to Antelope Mesa and specifically the ruins at Awat’ovi. This is a very special ruin and at one time, it was a great trading center. Today, it is a very quiet spiritual place for the Hopi People. The week flew by and left the participants with many warm memories of a wonderful time and place.

One Incident I will Always Remember
                                by Bob Sampson

An interesting event occurred the last evening that we were together. As I was leaving the restaurant at the Hopi Cultural Center, I heard a number of kids calling “ Bob, Bob.” I turned and saw a gathering of kids from the Second Mesa Day School. As far as they are concerned, apparently, there is only one Bob. After we chatted they asked if I had a car. When I said yes, seven of the kids asked if I would give them a lift back to their village, Shungopvi. They had walked to the Cultural Center in order to get a late diner and take it back home. When they got their order, I had seven kids in the car, with their dinners giving off a delicious aroma, going back to Shungopvi.

After dropping one off near his turnoff, the rest were dropped off at the village meeting hall. I don’t know whether they ate their food there or went back to one of their houses. After working at the Second Mesa School for these many years, you tend to build up a relationship with the children where they accept you as a part of their community. This is one incident I will always remember.
